Twin Peaks Redux (August 23, 2016)

Last night I rewatched the Twin Peaks pilot on Netflix. Once again, as was the case with the original viewing in the 1990s, I was struck by how 1950s the show was, from the clothes (long skirts, leather jackets), the Dean-Brando doppelgangers, the soap opera show-within-a-show "Invitation to Love" they were always watching, to the character names (Ronette Pulaski, Harry Truman).

Khan Con 2016 (August 9, 2016)

Will set up Saturday at the second annual Khan Con in Hillsville, Virginia.
The show is moved a few miles from the Hillsville VFW to the Carroll County Recreation Building, near Exit 14, I-77.

Last year's inaugural show exceeded expectations for selling and buying. This is the last show before the Virginia Vintage Comics & Collectibles Show at the Salem Civic Center August 20.

Rob Con 2016 (August 3, 2016)

Rob Con was noteworthy, not so much for the unusual sales (Dagar, Team America) or tremendous buys (more on that later), but for me the defining moment of the show was a minor sale.
A boy had gone through my dollar boxes and came up with two Captain Americas. He pulled out his wallet, saw it was empty and said "Oh," glumly. The guy next to him looking for comics tossed him two one-dollar bills and said "get those comics." Made his day and mine.

Comic season heats up (April 21, 2016)

Last Saturday began the spring comic mongering season in earnest, with the Roanoke Valley Comicon at Tanglewood Mall. The show drew a record 2,500 people.
My own schedule heats up, with three shows in eight days. Saturday, April 23 is the inaugural NRV Comicon in Blacksburg. The following Saturday is the Bluff City, Tennessee show, and then the next day, Sunday, the Charlotte Comicon.
The Virginia Vintage show is August 20 at the Salem Civic Center.

Solo #1 (January 8, 2016)

Today's Comic is Solo #1, from DC 2004.
In my daily Comic Reading Project, it isn't often that I check out modern comics. And it is even less often that I find one worthwhile. But Solo #1 was a delightful surprise.

DC published 12 issues of the anthology series, featuring works of its top artists of the day. Sometimes anthologies don't work, but this one does. It features works by Tim Sale. There are no earth-shaking mega-events that would serve as story boards for blockbuster movies. Rather, these are slice-of-life vignettes, like New Yorker stories with an O. Henry twist.

Today's Comic: Dynamic #19 (1946) September 25, 2015

Today's comic is a good Golden Age anthology book Dynamic #19, with a mix of superhero, adventure, humor, military, detective and space stories.
Dynamic Man and Dynamic Boy come to the aid of boys scammed out of summer camp experience. The Echo battles giant bats and villains, with his (super) power of ...ventriloquism?
Ima Slooth is a cartoony female Sherlock Holmes.
Sergt. Bell allows himself to be demoted to solve a robbery-at-sea.
The centerfold is a 2-page spread of gags.
Yankee Boy solves a murder.
